12 HP B&S I/C Engine will not run. How do i fix it?
Got a lawn tractor for free. It did run when delivered but blew blue/white smoke out the exhaust and then shut off. I cleaned the carb witch was very dirty and discovered a large amount of oil/gas in the air filter. Cleaned it all out and now it will not stay running unless I put my hand over the intake to limit the air supply and back fires constantly. Took off head and there was oil/gas laying in the cylinder. The whole inside of the head is caked with black burn off.
My question is if I replace the piston rings and reseat the values will this stop the gas in oil issue or is there something else I need to look at replacing.

Get a carb rebuild kit. Some engines don't run well without the air filter installed. Some have a screw down the center of the filter that has to be screwed in the carb even if the filter is removed.
