How do you start iris seeds? And don't tell me DON'T!?
I had a dwarf bearded iris go to seed (baby boo) the seeds appear to be viable, I want to know how to start them.
Two different ways you can experiment if you have enough seed and try both..
HOW TO START BEARDED IRIS SEEDS
Place seeds inside panty hose and soak in tap water (boil water first if you have city water or chlorine in your water). Change water daily and continue soaking the seeds for 10 days.
After the 10 days is up, rinse the seeds off in the panty hose and put them inside a black plastic bag. Put the black plastic bag in the freezer for 2 hours. Then from the freezer put them in the refrigerator (vegetable crisper drawer).
Check seeds periodically for sprouting which should occur within 30-90 days. It's best to catch them quickly after they start sprouting so the roots don't get too tangled upside the panty hose.
Plant seeds in a mixture of about three parts potting soil to one part perlite.

After the final rinse the seeds are covered with a 10 % solution of bleach for 1/2 hour. (10% solution created by mixing 1 part bleach with 10 parts water) Pour off the bleach solution and rinse quickly with water a couple of times. Then cover the bowl with plastic wrap and secure with a rubber band (do not seal with an air tight lid) or we transfer the tied bundles to a plastic bag and secure them with a twist tie. The bleach treatment is to reduce the mould population that will want to grow on the wet seeds during the next stage, which is refrigeration (stratification).
