Can i overload my keyboard's circuit board by putting LED lights?
I'm trying to mod my keyboard by adding back lighting. I was going to to use the scroll lock key for a switch and the LED indicatr light for the power supply. i counted 30 LED spots. I was wondering if i cud over load the circuit board on it.
im trying to add a backlight with 30 LED bulbs and i was thinking of using 1 led slot on the circuit board for the power supply. so was wondering if i cud overload or short circuit or cause any other damage to circuit board doing so
Yes, you can overload it. First, the Scroll Lock LED is turned on/off by a tiny transistor inside an IC chip in the keyboard. It is expecting a load of something like 5 -10ma and no more. If you increase the load without adding a power transistor to buffer the load, don't be surprised if the chip burns out. i.e. keyboard, poof!
Also, the USB interface has a current limitation. USB devices may draw up to 100 mA before "negotiation" with the host. 30 LED bulbs at 20ma each will blow right past that.
Why not just get a little AC-DC adapter from Radio Shack and light up your keyboard with a separate power source for the LEDS, so that the user needs sunglasses?

Where to install led lights in the home
Knowing where to install led lights and light bulbs in the home is an issue for many people as it is a relatively new technology. It is however one that people need to get to grips with especially with the phasing out of filament light bulbs and the unpopularity of CFL low energy light bulbs. Many people have only seen led lighting in applications such as high powered torches, garden lighting and novelty lamps and don’t yet fully appreciate the many uses that it can be put to in the home.
The best place to use led lights in your home is in the areas where they truly excel. Led lights are ideal for replacing spot lights as they emit a very bright pure light that is very directional. This makes them the ideal replacement for halogen lights which have been very popular over the past 10 years.
You may be wondering why you should bother replacing the halogen lights in your home. The first reason is money. Led lights can be run at a fraction of the cost of halogen lights and they also beat CLF energy saving light bulbs into a hat.
