Medicinal Herbs - Basics That Everyone Should Know About
People from various civilizations have always been looking for remedies for the problems and diseases they had. In almost all presently known ancient cultures, plants have had a very important role, either in a medical or in another sense.
As time passed, knowledge of medicinal herbs and their applications, expanded with time, so that nowadays there is already a lot of data in favor of treatments based on medicinal herbs. In relation to many herb species, scientific studies were made, and thanks to this type of research, the bioactivity of many medicinal herbs has been also scientifically verified. However, one should have in mind that the herbs can not always compete with the artificial products of the pharmaceutical industry, but fortunately, in many ways they can be helpful, and in many cases, they present a healthier and cheaper alternative.
The hobby of gathering medicinal herbs is a interesting, rewarding and useful activity, that is becoming more and more popular with time. In addition, by collecting medicinal plants in the nature, one also benefits because of the time that is spent in the natural environment, which by itself positively affects health of the mind and body. Depending on the places in which one will search for herbs, equipment that is needed can be relatively simple or a bit more complex. The essential equipment that one would need are, for example, strong garden scissors, a knife, small garden shovel and something to put the gathered plants in. A manual for identification would also be useful, if one is just starting with this hobby.
The equipment can also be more complicated if one plans to go "hunting" in somewhat more demanding areas, such as mountains. With all the specified equipment, it is a good idea to take some basic hiking equipment, such as tools for navigation (a compass or even a GPS device), enough drinking water and of course, food. In any case, I would also recommend taking a camera, not only for taking pictures of the plants you will find and collect, but also because of the environment which is usually wonderful and full of great motives, especially if you are going to the mountains.
It is also a good idea to keep notes of where you found certain species of medicinal herbs. For this purpose, a map of the area in which you collect medicinal plants can be used. You can simply mark locations where certain species have been found.
And at the end, I would like to stress one more thing. Wherever you find certain types of plants, do not collect all of them, but always remember to leave at least a few of them, so that they can reproduce on the same location again with time. Remember that you are not the only one who is looking for medicinal plants, and it would be unthankful to gather everything for yourself.
