Will building a deck raise my property taxes?
I already have an outdoor patio, but I'd prefer to build a wooden deck. I live in southeast Michigan and my taxes are high enough as it is...
In Michigan, it's not considered temporary, since you need to dig down at least 42 inches for the foundation. Like the others said, however, it probably won't raise taxes that much, if any.
As for pulling a permit, it's a gamble. You could go ahead without one, but if someone reports you later, the inspector could very well find faults with it that could have been corrected much easier during construction. And the fees could be higher, as a friend of mine recently found out.
If you pull a permit, you'll need to submit plans. There will be up-front fees, and inspections at various stages of construction. On the good side, if something's wrong, they'll let you know and you can correct it as you go along. Plus, you won't have to worry about them coming after you later.
