How to plant pumpkins...?
I'm going to plant pumpkins! Is there any specific way I should plant them? I think I heard somewhere to plant them in a mound... but what exactly does that mean? Should I dig like a trench around it for the water? I got the pumpkin plant from a nursery. It says it's a "Big Max" pumpkin... which as far as I can tell only means it's a bit bigger... How much space should I allow for my plant? Am I supposed to do something special about the flowers? I really have no idea how to do anything about planting this pumpkin... any tips would be VERY MUCH appreciated!! Thanks so much!
Are there certain bugs I should look out for? There are some gophers around here... should I put like a fence around the roots?
Where do you live. I grow them from seeds. I start them in May and plant them after Memorial Day. They need space, a place that you don't care if the lawn gets high. I only allow 2 vines per plant. and 1 pumpkin per vine (for maximum size on pumpkin) That boils down to 2 pumpkins per plant. Every time a new pumpkin emerges, I pull it off so the main pumpkins get the nutrition. Pumpkins appear yellow when first starting, then turn orange when they are getting ripe. I grow them for Christmas money. I have 27 plants, I get 54 pumpkins, I sell them for 15 cents a pound cheaper then the grocery stores and get .29 cents per pound. My pumpkins range from 56 pounds to 123 pounds (that one got 4 faces on Halloween) . Make sure you feed them weekly and water them daily. If you water late in the day, don't get the leaves wet, you can get a rot that will kill the plant. Yes mound planting is fine, I don't really bother with that.
With our current climate as it is, it may stay warm enough thru September. Once there is a frost, your done.
