How can I wire an alternator to excite the field?
This is a three wire Delco alternator. It charges fine if I quickly excite the field from the battery, but when I run a wire from the ignition switch to the field, it keeps power to the ignition switch and cranks the starter. I thought the tempory power from the ignition switch would excite the field, but it just keeps the starter cranking. A assume that I need to put a resister in the wire from the ignition to the field, but will that keep the starter from cranking? or an I doing this completely wrong. This is on a diesel tractor that I converted from a externally regulated alternator to one with a built in alternator. How can I temporarily power the field wire?
The way I wire up alot of the delco alts is like this.
Big post on back, to battery or starter..
If holding alt in your hands with pulley facing you..
Term on left, run a wire from it, back to post on rear of alt.
Term on right.. Wire to switched 12 volts, use a 47 ohm, 1 watt resister inline with that wire
